A hill figure is a symbol carved into a steep hill and then defined by crushed chalk or other substance, which allows it to be seen from great distances.

Yes, it's true!  I'd never done it; never even thought about it!  My pictures were absolutely pure and untouched, before I joined Newsvine Photographers.

Silbury Hill is a Neolithic conical construct, dating from 2,600 - 2,400 BC.  Its circular base covers five acres, and an estimated one million tons of clay and chalk were used to build it, making it the largest man-made mound in Europe.

Henges are Neolithic earthworks, which consist of a circular area defined by a bank and ditch construction. Within the henge are often other circular structures made of wood or stone.

Avebury Henge, dated at 3,000 BC, includes the largest stone circle in the world.  The Henge covers 28 acres, and the circumference of the outer bank is nearly a mile long.  It is estimated that the site once included a minimum of 247 standing stones within the outer bank, plus an additional 400 stones forming two avenues, connected to the Henge.

For those who follow Newsvine Photographers' articles, you've probably heard me whine about my lack of a telephoto lens, which has been on my wish list since well before I joined the Vine.  My good news for today is that I finally got one.

Barrows are Neolithic tombs, often called burial mounds, which are scattered throughout Britain.  Wiltshire County, in particular, is home to 148 of Britain's 260 barrows.  There are two primary types of barrows: long barrows, which were designed for communal burials and round barrows, which are smaller and designed for individuals.

West Kennet Long Barrow

The most famous of these is the West Kennet Long Barrow, constructed in 3,650 BC, making it older than nearby Stonehenge and Avebury.  In fact, it's the oldest and longest barrow in England.

Work started on Arundel Castle in 1067 during the reign of William the Conqueror as a fortification for the mouth of the River Arun and a defensive position for the surrounding land against invasion from France.^{[citation needed]} The original structure was a motte and double bailey castle.
