Tag! Rules of the Game

When I was a little girl, I used to love to play the game of Tag. I’d cover my eyes, count to ten, and then try to locate the other players, who were hiding from me.  In our version, played in the woods or a big field, the other players would have to make noises, so I’d have a general idea of where they were hiding.  I’d hunt them down, chase them, and try to make physical contact.

“Tag!  You’re it!”

Though many are unaware of it, a similar game of tag is played online (and here on the Vine) when we try to find articles of a specific theme or topic.   To help others locate (and hopefully read) our articles, we have the option of adding tags.

Tags are specific search words, which categorize our articles in the ever expanding library of the Internet (and Newsvine.)

Some tag words are broad, such as photography or images.  To help narrow search parameters, we add other more specific tags, such as nature, flowers, or birds.  We can be very precise and search for a specific type of flower or bird, such as daffodil or cardinal.

The choice of tag words is often subjective, and this can lead to a very unorganized library, making it difficult to find something that might have been published some time ago.

To help organize the Newsvine Photographer Group library, we encourage members to use specific tags, which will help others to find our articles, when they use specific search words.  In order to be useful, it is necessary to be consistent in the terms, as well as the spelling.

For example, Newsvine Photographers has been around for some time, and early on, adopted the tag “Foto-Friday” as our own, to organize member articles in our library, and to differentiate our articles from others posted to photography groups.  If you use the tag “Photo-Friday,” it will not appear in our listings for “Foto-Friday” articles, and readers who search for the for “Foto-Friday” tag won’t find yours.

Specific tags established by our group include:

“newsvine-photographers”

“foto-Friday”

“weekend-exposure”

“photo-challenge”

"nvp-info"

Group members should be aware that other tag words are assigned for specific photo challenges, in order to create sub-listings within the broader “photo-challenge” category.  These tags will be noted in the original photo-challenge article.

I’d like to clarify, that Foto-Friday, Weekend-Exposure and the monthly Photo-Challenge are recurring activities, sponsored by the Newsvine Photographers Group.  We respectfully ask that non-group members refrain from using these tags, because they were established by and for our group, to help us organize and find member articles.

********

This is part one of a two-part series of articles on tags and their usage.  Part two will deal with how to determine other tag words and expressions to use in your articles, and how we all can benefit from effective “tagging.”

Good article, etva, and I love the analogy to the game of tag. Using tags effectively is definitely one of the best ways to support the group and to help people find our articles. I'm looking forward to your next article.

Tags really do make it easier to find stuff. When I was doing my article on recommendations, it was so much easier to link series, rather than individual articles. If you use the same tag on all of your articles of the same subject, you can include one link for people to find all your previous articles on that topic -- like a library list.

Ahem, well, as it happens, I noticed, and I'm determined to fix that. I plan to use you as an example in my next article! *evil grins*

Tags aren't just for groups. They help us find any set of similar-themed articles -- like the "snow-war" articles! If you create your own tags and use them consistently, when someone says "What the hell is wrong with those people????" -- and you know they do ask that about us, we can just supply a single link to explain the war and the various battles:)

OK, so you need to choose a tag name -- "Insanity" would be good, but it's far too broad for our purposes. I like "snow-wars" as a tag:)

Exactly, Rottlady. Sometimes it's easier to watch tags than people, especially when someone is prolific with seeds and articles of all topics.

In regards to NVP, I love that you use "the Ozarks" as one of your tags, because that's how I can find your specific photo articles, among the all the "Foto-Friday" articles.

You know, I make it easy on myself and have a list of tags for foto-friday saved in a notepad file. That way, all I have to do is copy that and insert to the article. I like to make things as easy as possible. *grins*

Very informative post! I have wondered how necessary the "exacting" of a tag is? Are the hyphens necessary? Does case matter? I also have noticed that NV arranges the tags...they don't post the way I enter them so priority must matter too? How many tags should be on an article and/or is there a point that the tag can't be searched for? i.e. fifth word?

Reply#8 - Fri Jan 27, 2012 7:47 AM EST

Thanks Anna!

Spelling and hyphens matter in NVP tags, but not capitalization, and you use commas to separate them. So your tags might look like:

newsvine-photographers, foto-friday, birds, cardinal

The most important factor is consistency. (bird vs. birds, for example) A spelling inconsistency means your article won't show up where people are looking for it.

As for how many tags to use, that is a subjective decision, but my personal choice is to simplify: be short and to the point, or you will have a library full of so many tags that few people will take the time to search through it. The key is to consider what people might search for, and whether your article is a good example of it.

There might be a bird in the sky in one of my landscape photos, but if the bird isn't my primary focus, I won't use it as a tag.

This is something I'll address in the next article, but some tag words are really not necessary. I recommend a broad category (Wildlife) a medium category (birds) and a specific category (cardinal.) If a particular subject is one you post frequently (say Rocky or Sue) you might add the name as a tag, so people can go back and find those articles. But does the tag word (animal) really help focus the topic of your article? IMO, no. I wouldn't do a search for "animal" if I'm looking for a bird picture, and "wildlife" is a more descriptive broad category than "animal" for my personal library sections.

Some people use every tag they can think of to try and get more visitors from the internet, as opposed to the Vine, but that only works if you have enough traffic on your articles, to move it up the search lists on the internet. (I believe sites with the most visits show up first in search results.)

Personally, I think it makes more sense to keep an organized library, so those of us from NV can find the articles we're interested in, if we visit someone's column.

At any rate, I'll go into more detail on my next article, and make some suggestions for various categories. In the meantime, you might play around and try to search for some of your own articles. See what search words finally bring them up.

I'm not sure why the tags get rearranged when posting. *shrugs* NV does add its own news category as a tag (or not-news) because that is how it organizes its "library."

BTW, you can go in and edit your old articles to add tags and organize your library. I did that when I realized I wasn't being consistent and my library was a mess.

One final note - tags are really important on Flickr, and they are done somewhat differently. Instead of hyphens, they use quotes around phrases, and commas don't seem to be necessary. The best way to figure out what tags to use, is to look around at similar photos and see how they are tagged.

My images are leased to publishers through several agencies and web sites. When publishers do on-line image searches, they almost invariably do "KEY WORD" searches ... the "key words" being the equivalent of "tags."

In many photo editing software programs (like Photoshop), usually under the FILE menu in the top menu bar, is a SUB MENU ITEM, File Info. Next time when opening an image, see if such menu items exist and click on "File Info."

If you've never done this, I think you'll be surprised ... you'll see what is generally referred to as a set of fields in which to insert IPTC data (International Press Telecommunications Council) ...

To make a long story short ...

Metadata are critical to photo business

They are critical by providing important information about the image and by describing it properly. IPTC Photo Metadata is made to describe and administrate photographs and to provide the most relevant rights related information. This way metadata makes visual content easily accessible by human language terms or machine readable codes.

http://www.iptc.org/site/Photo_Metadata/

The quickest way to see how this works, and whether or not it will be useful to you personally, is to open an image as explained above and see for yourself.

Try it and, if you'd like, share your reactions.

TAGS, METADATA, KEY WORDS ... pretty much accomplish the same thing.
